charcoal

by Patrick James

Lowered into wet darkness
during our Civil-war,
the earth, soon dried off

your bones- the faded
paint in the chiselled-out
grooves of some epitaph

and collapsing wreaths...
apparently abandoned twenty
years ago, a now remote

reminder that our old war--
heroes had once been loved.
Now, no-one visits your

grave bar the odd stray
animals which occasionally
relieves themselves on the
battalion of nettles.
