Research Assistant

by Deborah P. Kolodji

Alone on the home-world
not Penelope but still waiting
a spacer's wife tends zoo specimens
souvenirs of genetic adventure
gifts from an absentee husband

reminders of Ulyssian travel
& promiscuous experiments --
cross-breeding limits discovered
recorded & logged in quack studies
for improvement of the species.

Xenobiologist disillusioned
by duty delegation, days filled
with half-human cyclop tears
& the green diaper rash
of a toddler Medusa

she forgets why she stays
barren, watching over caged
miscegenic step-children &
considers broadcasting her own
siren's call.
